FastLoupe vs Photo Mechanic
Choose by the job you need to finish: browse and select within an existing library, or ingest and prepare files for a deadline. Price matters, but it does not replace a missing workflow.
On Mac, download free and start the optional trial in the app. See what stays free and what the unlock buys.
Where Photo Mechanic fits
Photo Mechanic concentrates on ingest and metadata preparation. Photo Mechanic Plus adds a catalogue across storage locations. If captioning and delivery conventions drive your working day, evaluate those tools directly; FastLoupe is not a substitute for every specialist workflow.
Where FastLoupe fits
Use a local catalogue to find past shoots, review alternatives, rate photographs and keep track of an existing library. You can catalogue folders in place or seed a separate FastLoupe catalogue from Lightroom Classic metadata without writing to the .lrcat. There is no ongoing two-way catalogue sync.
FastLoupe builds its own local catalogue and preview cache. Initial cataloguing takes time; later grid browsing uses those prepared previews. Full-resolution review and export can read the originals. Cached-scroll measurements do not tell you how long your cull will take.
Licensing, without a false either/or
Photo Mechanic offers monthly, annual and perpetual licences. Camera Bits currently lists annual prices of $149 for Photo Mechanic and $249 for Plus; perpetual licences are $299 and $399, including one year of updates and support, with continued use on compatible operating systems. Tax may apply. Checked 5 September 2026; use the current vendor page before buying.
FastLoupe is a one-time Windows purchase or an optional one-time Mac unlock. The Mac download retains free browsing and triage. The platform-specific launch offer is below; optional Azure backup is separate. A cheaper licence is useful only if the app does the jobs you need.
Try the actual handoff
Use a small test set. Check your required metadata fields, naming conventions and editor handoff, not just the first screenful. Neither a thumbnail benchmark nor a lower list price demonstrates that you can file a finished job more quickly.
