Photo culling software: choose by the job
Written by the developer of FastLoupe. The useful comparison is which task each tool supports, not a scorecard designed to make our product win.
On Mac, download free and start the optional trial in the app. See what stays free and what the unlock buys.
Five starting points
Photo Mechanic: investigate ingest and metadata preparation; Plus adds cataloguing. It offers subscription and perpetual licensing, so “rent versus own” is not a complete distinction.
FastRawViewer: investigate RAW-based exposure and image assessment when technical inspection drives the decision.
Narrative: investigate assisted culling and eye/focus assessments when those checks are central to your work.
Aftershoot: investigate AI-assisted culling and related editing workflows. Its culling is advertised as offline; do not assume assisted tools all upload your photographs.
FastLoupe: investigate browsing and manual review across an existing local library. It builds a catalogue and previews, leaves in-place originals where they are, and can seed metadata from Lightroom Classic. It does not automatically choose your best frames.
Use a small, repeatable evaluation
Choose a representative test copy. Include initial preparation, the actual review and the final editor handoff. Record both mistakes and time. Do not compare one tool’s fresh import with another tool’s prepared cache and call the difference a culling benchmark.
Check the functions you depend on: metadata fields, label names, file types and output files. Read each vendor’s current price and licensing terms. Temporary promotions and old perpetual-licence prices are not permanent product facts.
When not to choose FastLoupe
If you need automatic best-shot selection, blink/focus scoring, client galleries, camera control or an advanced RAW-development replacement, evaluate products built for that requirement. A low one-time price does not make those missing workflows appear.
